CO2 Market and Biogas
Voluntary carbon markets allow participants to purchase carbon offsets to shrink their CO2 profiles. ALGIECEL offers a solution in the form of a technology and business model to capture CO2 emissions and issue carbon credits, which are then traded on private marketplaces. The value of these carbon credits in the voluntary carbon markets constantly increases due to public and policy pressure to carry out a green global transition.
ALGIECEL will focus on the small and mid-size industries with CO2 challenges considered too small for P2X, with our modular and easy-to-install solution.
Initially, our clients will be industries like biogas production plants, fermentation plants or power generation plants.
ALGIECEL´s primary target market for the photobioreactor is the biogas sector, which is experiencing significant growth with around 18,000 plants in Europe today, compared with only 6,000 in 2009. A solution to the related increase in CO2 emissions needs to be found, considering the rising value of CO2 penalties.
Carbon Capture Business Model
Industrial clients with a CO2 emissions problem have to either incur a cost in order to remove their CO2 emissions, or pay CO2 penalties. ALGIECEL has developed a business model in which the CO2 is transformed into valuable derivative products which will generate enough revenue to compensate for the cost of Co2 removal.
An industrial client, e.g. a biogas plant, will purchase or lease the number of modular ALGIECEL photobioreactors equivalent to their CO2 emissions. CO2 will be captured and directed into the photobioreactor, which transforms it into derivative products such as animal feed or human food supplements. ALGIECEL will have off-take agreements for the biomass in place, applied at derivative product options with the highest possible margin for the local market. The revenue stream from the derivative product sales will be shared with the client.
Furthermore, ALGIECEL will issue carbon credits equivalent to the amount of CO2 transformed into biomass. This constitutes another revenue stream that will be shared with the client.
Microalgae Biomass Product Applications
Through their high content of nutrients, proteins and omega-3 fatty acids, there is a large spectrum of high-value products to be produced from microalgae biomass. The microalgae biomass has a high lipid content that can be split from the biomass, thus enabling the production of algae oil and partially defatted algae biomass.
Algae oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which are valuable ingredients in human diets. The current supply for omega-3 food supplements derives from wild fish, as only wild fish contain omega-3 from eating microalgae, and as aquaculture fish are fed insufficient diets. Microalgae oil can be applied as a sustainable alternative to fish oil for food supplements, as it neither relies wild fish catches nor has a high CO2 profile.
Microalgae biomass shows very high levels of protein and remaining valuable residues of the algae oil. Furthermore, algae biomass compounds are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics. Thus, algae biomass is an attractive ingredient for animal feed mixes, as it supplies valuable nutrients while improving the CO2 profile of the feed mix.
